it had something to do with the rain

i've been telling people all day with that sarcastic way i have that it was nice being kept awake by booming, house-endangering thunder at two in the morning in early february, but in reality i was just scared. not of the storm but of something else i can't define. hazy lack of sleep combines with the sound of the thunder itself combines with janel moving around upstairs combines with the sound of rain and ice against my thin windows combines with it's a weeknight and laura's not here combines with the memory of the last time this was happening on an early and equally winter morning.
that morning i happened across some message board in an uncharacteristic computer-in-bed moment before the sun was even up and people were trading weather stories about the new england thunder phenomena in an exaggerated electronic version of 'how about this weather, right?' this guy in rhode island described it in this way that had me seeing the near-dawn landscapes all over the region and a lot of blissfully ignorant sleeping people in perfect little towns and villages that don't exist. strange weather for this time of year, he called it. i think i hate that guy. feeling lost in an unseasonal regional affliction i came to the conclusion that it'll be a terrible loss whenever i have to leave this house. the thunder wouldn't sound the same in another place.
